Project Synopsis

The Gladesville Rd Gates Relocation project was a significant stage in St Joseph’s College extensive refurbishment roll-out of Heritage Significant assets. The gates, as well as the sandstone and iron fence, originally formed part of the fencing designed and located at Sydney Town Hall. St Joseph’s College purchased these assets via auction from the City Council (now the City of Sydney Council) on 13 th July 1926, and the gates and fencing date from 1869, with the Main Gates (Ryde Rd) built in 1892 at the Town Hall site.

Bloompark were engaged to manage the authority approvals, design management, tendering and contract administration necessary to remove, refurbish, automate and re-instate the gates, pillars and fencing. The removal of paint and restoration of damaged stone and iron elements was undertaken in a controlled environment onsite. This included the re-treatment of the refurbished elements prior to new painting being completed.

In parallel, major civil works were also being undertaken onsite, including key service infrastructure relocation works. These works ensured the reinstatement of the gate set complied with statutory standards regarding width for dual carriageway as well as local authority requirements regarding setback from the boundary.

Bloompark’s extensive experience mitigated the challenges encountered working on a live site bound by a Heritage-significant building (the Block House), Heritage-significant tree and established retaining wall structure. Bloompark worked with the Client and Contractor to ensure this main thoroughfare was in operation during key events at the College throughout the 6-month project duration, enabling the school to conduct business as usual with little disruption to staff, students and the College community.
